Marriage has been an institution of society from 1200 CE. Over the course of many years, from ancient Greece to the 21st century, the definition of “marriage” has evolved. Not even sixty years ago in the United States, marriages amongst interracial couples were banned and same-sex marriage wasn’t even thought of. Today, same-sex couples are able to marry along with interracial couples. As of June 26, 2015, the 14th amendment ruled that all states must grant and recognise same-sex couples marriage licences. This ruling has come a long way since the when the first state, Hawaii, ruled to recognise same-sex marriage. States started recognising and performing same-sex marriages for the past few decades and proudly so, it is now a nationwide right for same-sex couples to marry thanks to Obergefell V. Hodges.
